Picking one child’s birth over the other I just wont do. Abigail was my first born and holds special meaning in that; but Rowen did not put me though an emergency c-section in the middle of the night - that is special in it’s own right too.

So ruling the kids out I am going to have to go with something that has happened more than once and it is more the feeling at the moment than just the memory itself that has this win out.

The best feeling in the world comes to everyone at different times in different places for me it is that peaceful felling of being alone, in a kayak in Northern Michigan.

No noise of the city, no thought to the troubles awaiting at home. It is just me, the kayaking, and the sights and sounds of nature.

My favorite river is the Pere Marquette River in the Huron-Manistee National Forsest located in Northern Lower Michigan.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEQagUVP5nGpPgDWts0D7xBw3QrLVVWo6KDu-0Jmr6phAsDrcrcozw_Uos1_1nuiCF6d157b7ecm3sYr6qJ-QZbCoJ7urwB8GvKN1UrdyAkcJoU-clkDzzbAF5qm00HUgsoSDKxQueo3c/s320/pere+marquette.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599535249265079842" />Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05312767310447197192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4346434586048489051.post-21832298441703014222011-04-24T10:41:00.000-04:002011-04-25T10:43:54.071-04:0030 Days of pictures - Day 4: NightDay Four: A picture of my favorite night:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj47Hb29IAi2pMCSnG0BWcKXSbWSRVNFiiqUe3DBe2IkXfG9QU9QUzZQp-c4s6LY2Iai0VllZTigQFNbBjNgNuRneuRejxnTkgDULIHdnwVESvvQtqaef8UeCvaUJXklpeBcSbWW35JztA/s320/aurora-borealis.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599531546380645266" />

I can't say that i have a favorite night but I do love the aura borealis - a.k.a. the northern lights.Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05312767310447197192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4346434586048489051.post-5918318944013297282011-04-23T12:15:00.003-04:002011-04-23T12:17:57.852-04:0030 days of pictures Day 3: Picture of the cast from my favorite show. This actually took a little thought - what really is my favorite show?

There are a lot of shows that I enjoy: Criminal Minds, anything with Chef Gordan Ramsey, Law and Order: SVU, Top Chef, Iron Chef, NCIS, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, and yes even the Real Housewives… of every county…

So what is my favorite show?

I’ve decided to go with White Collar.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 227px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf7f7LIR_hysUaAjQ7tC8sypwT-B77twQctxoGkyiM12kymfkmSXbgQNk_YgWq6kEQfQi1OlJrIzON7O7WjGHlS5YPMjnjdC2MhlUBjB6iCDKxSR14jxnZNALMWQ_rC3JrcP6kyqdXnCs/s320/White+Collar.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5598813776060540530" />Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05312767310447197192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4346434586048489051.post-82884735663277199072011-04-22T17:05:00.005-04:002011-04-22T17:09:16.403-04:0030 days of pictures Day 2: Me and the person I have been closest with the longest<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn4Ad0EsO5h7mY2kHeFqGmz3K0I5_aZeeT9-MusPLGTmVn5NUeJOi5ni_hrQNEDoyXYF7S_gQI4i9HzAPAlwfUz_OpkK86EhBEyAZONNc4mvuSxdoiVyck5CE6BWah86wNiVBZHlJxHWI/s320/Hotdog.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5598517292022902210" />

Okay so there are three of us in the shot but clearly I am not close with Hockey Hall of Famer Larry Murphy; but I am close with my mom.

My mom and I are more than just mother and daughter - we’re hockey buddies.

We have been going to hockey games together for as long as I can remember and she had developed me into the woman I am today in every way.

When I was a kid we use to go up to watch the Flint Generals; as I got older we started going to see the Detroit to Red Wings.

A little over a year ago I had fallen ill while living out in Virginia and my mom drove out there to help take care of the kids. I am terrified of thunderstorms - especially those at night.
2. I hate having my picture taken.
3. There is a large scar that goes across my chest in a diagonal from upper right to lower left side.
4. I am left-handed.
5. My favorite thing to do in the summer is to go camping “up north” and go kayaking down the Pierre Marquette River.
6. I can speak some (read and write better) Swedish and Finnish; but Spanish and French confuse me.
7. Tom was best friend though high school and was diagnosed with cancer when he was 19 and fought off round after round of chemo. Tom had two goals in live: live to be 25 and graduate from college: he was five months shy of turning 25 and one month shy of graduating from college when he lost his battle with cancer.
8. As a kid my mom told me that learning to ice skate and play hockey was too dangerous so she put me in gymnastics and dance instead.
9. I use to sing competitively in a women’s barbershop chorus (Fenton Lakes Chorus of Sweet Adelines International) - I have sang: Lead, Baritone and Bass.
10. I enjoy laying out in the grass and watching the clouds move or laying on the beach listening to the waives.Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05312767310447197192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4346434586048489051.post-80827363320023699482011-01-02T08:21:00.005-05:002011-01-02T08:54:30.214-05:00The Gr8 debate: Sid vs Ovi<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 304px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOcOPhvg4SbdpkK096zpwqSdDQIftDLVVgtAayKCRj_gMLyeJFjWT4_1vZQLrl5PvGk5YFC5zxS0JWHft1GfeFeGs3l8zR1F7vVkFg_qhm5xQExFYttjlcOUxBdoNQQDCd0wFuGgzqrl0/s320/Zetter.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5557584241813384546" />
As if this hasn't been played out enough in recent years we finally got the Sid vs Ovi Winter Classic match up. And guess what happened? Capitals won. That now puts each team in a win category for the Winter Classic.

So now every time these teams meet up that too will be brought up, along with Sid's cup and Ovi's he's-won-so-many-I-am-losing-count awards. They are both two great players. I was lucky enough to watch Ovechkin and the Capitals when I was living in the DC area going to school; and have no problem with his theatrics (his goal celebrations, his being out there for the fans, this passion and excitement for the game).

Now that we've had the Winter Classic between the two and all the hype I have one question:

Can we move on to some other players in the league?

There are so many other talented players (even on the Penguins and Capitals) that are not getting any recognition. Some recognition that the Western Conference exist would be great. I realize the Wild are not a great team but they are rebuilding; and doing it the right way - not by tanking for years to get 5 years worth of top 5 overall picks. So where is the love for Mikko Koivu? What about Chicago's Jonathan Toews? He won the cup - more recently than Sid the Kid - and was younger. Heck Toews is even a member of the Triple Gold Club. That's amazing and not just for how young he is. What about Matt Duchene out in Colorado? If it wasn't for the financial problems and the BizNasty2point0 twitter account I don't think people would realize Phoenix has an NHL team. Vancouver Canucks Ryan Kesler was the cover to NHL 2k11 but there was very little hype about it - nothing like Ovechkin being the cover of NHL 2k10.

Even Steven Stamkos from Tampa Bay Lightning would be a breath of fresh air into the NHL marketing plan. He did tie Crosby for most goals last season ans is second to him in points and goals this season. NHL wants to push these sunbelt teams and tell people that they have a place in the league yet a star player out of the south is mostly ignored.

Even with the Original 6 I don't think marketing was so limited.Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05312767310447197192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4346434586048489051.post-47980067868853481392010-12-31T22:15:00.002-05:002010-12-31T22:15:01.013-05:00Hyvää uuttavuotta! The San Jose Sharks, as you remember are coached by former Red Wings assistant coach Todd McLellan, invited Lilja to training camp. Thus far he has not been cut from the line up and according to Dave Lozo from NHL.com the Swedish web site Expressen is reporting that Lilja is going to be playing with the San Jose Sharks this season.

I can not say that I am shocked. I actually kind of figured this would happen when I heard he was invited to the camp. I know some San Jose fans are not thrilled with the addition of Lilja to their team; I'd take him back (maybe trade them Ericsson).

So I guess this is our final good-bye Andreas. Derek Boogaard? No one is going to be fooled into thinking that the Rangers are going to use him for his puck posession quality (face it the guy hasn't scored a goal since Janurary 7, 2006.

Yes that is right Janurary 7, 2006 was the last time that enforcer Derek Boogaard has scored a goal in the NHL. He's played in over 200 games since then yet the New York Rangers felt they needed to sign him to a 4-year deal worth $6,500,000. That is a cap hit of around $1,600,000 a year.

In comparison:
Mike Modano $1,750,000
Kris Draper $1,583,333
Darren Helm $912,500
Justin Abdelkader $787,500
Partick Eaves $750,000
Ruslan Salei $1,100,000
Jimmy Howard $716,666

Even Chris Osgood is being paid only $1,416,667 and guess what - he's scored more recently that Derek Boogaard.

Anyway enough on that rant. The Rangers don't care what I think of their over paying for Boogaard.

The projected line combinations for the game tonight as the Rangers host the Red Wings is as follows:

Rangers

Frolov-Christensen-Gaborik
Fedotenko-Stepan-Avery
Kennedy-Anisimov-Callahan
Boogaard-White-Prust

Staal / Del Zotto
Rozsival / Sauer
Valentenko / Gilroy

Lundqvist
Biron

Red Wings

Johan Franzen - Valtteri Filppula - Todd Bertuzzi
Jiri Hudler - Justin Abdelkader - Drew Miller
Mattias Ritola - Darren Helm - Patrick Eaves
Joakim Andersson - Corey Emmerton - Jan Mursak

Niklas Kronwall / Jonathan Ericsson
Jakub Kindl / Brian Rafalski
Doug Janik / Brendan Smith

Jimmy Howard (start)
Joey MacDonaldMonicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05312767310447197192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4346434586048489051.post-64844249399011580962010-09-29T09:03:00.006-04:002010-09-29T09:12:39.962-04:00Want to be part of Red Wings home opener?<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 205px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvKgqZNsIMeGlDhi5xIODMgU49FDUK-OTYTovp5tezurI53s8FLHHMLPezHCyUIhvSsCGnXRVgBy47lcXVlSq26WuLHhBkxBAa06bIKk6p2IT6MqsJtMTwXYx0YQcGw5f5pMJceUCM-oY/s400/The+Joe.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522322684506822322" />
Can't make it to the home opener on Friday October 8th but still want to be part of the excitement? Even though it has only been since Sunday night; but to those that have been waiting all summer for Red Wings hockey it was a long start to the week.

At least we get to watch the game tonight though, right?

Well maybe not so right.

The game tonight being played at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers is not being televised. So unless one of the teams decides to air the game on their website it looks might come down to digging out the radio to listen to WXYT 1270-AM to at least hear the game.

Don't have a radio other than in your car? Don't feel like sitting in your car all night to listen to the game? You're in luck! This past season was Ericsson's first full season with Detroit and left a lot to be desired. The coaching staff has given the "kid" every chance possible to kick the funk he is in, and be that defenseman that was good enough to be paired with his long time defense idol Nicklas Lidstrom. Will Ericsson finally kick the funk and get his confidence back? Or will Jakub Kindl push him down to the 7th defensive spot?

Jakub Kindl, the 19th overall (yeah you read that right 19th OVERALL) pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, has been playing in the AHL with the Griffins other than a short appearance last season with the Red Wings. The way the games have gone so far this preseason Kindl might just take that 6th spot with Salei and have Ericsson watching from the press box.

Derek Meech may have seen his time with the Red Wings come to an end as he would have to go on waiver to go back to Grand Rapids. Meech has been with the big club for a few seasons now but spends more time in the press box than on the ice during games. One skill of Meech's that has endured him to the organization is his ability to fill in as a forward the problem is he's played forward so often in his few appearances that many fans around the league thought he was a forward. With how much depth the Red Wings have for forwards now that niche Meech had in the system appears to have been phased out.

*Picture taken by Amanda Nitz at the Red and White Game at the end of Red Wings Training Camp in Traverse City, MI 2010 Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05312767310447197192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4346434586048489051.post-80217961394745353352010-09-28T10:22:00.007-04:002010-09-28T10:41:55.776-04:00Is David Frost back in the hockey game?According to reports coming from Andy Strickland the controversial former hockey agent is back in the game. In California.

In case you don't remember the story David Frost was the supposed target of a murder plot by former St. Louis Blues player Mike Danton. Danton plead guilty to conspiracy to commit murder; however, claimed the target was his estranged father.

Frost was later charged with 12 counts of sexual exploitation having to do with sexual acts between three under age females and some of his underage male players - he was acquitted of all charges.

Now back to current developments.

According to an article by Strickland Frost has changed his name and is now going by Jim McCauley (his wife's maiden name) and is working at the Laguna Hockey Academy in Southern California.

One parent (unnamed) in Stickland's article had this to say:

“He’s been deceiving people for nearly six months” says a parent whose son trains at the academy. When asked if he will continue sending his son there he responded, “Not anymore”.

For more information and updates to the story as they become available please go to Andy Strickland's True Hockey and read Davis Frost Caught Using Alias In California.Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05312767310447197192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4346434586048489051.post-40392493662606757042010-09-28T09:33:00.013-04:002010-09-28T10:15:56.393-04:00As Red Wings cut roster: Griffins gain depthAs the preseason continues two teams begin to emerge the Detroit Red Wings and the Grand Rapids Griffins.

If anything watching these preseason games for the Red Wings is showing that the future of the team is in good hands. Young players like Tomas Tatar that on any other team would crack the NHL roster will most likely spend the season with the AHL affiliate team in Grand Rapids - only strengthening their team and furthering his development.

Other young players that will probably be sent to the Grand Rapids Griffin's include: Hobey Baker Award finalist and first-round draft pick (2007) defensman Brendan Smith and fellow first-round pick (2008) goaltender Tomas McCollum and second-round pick Cory Emmerton (2006).

Not so young - Ilari Filppula (Red Wings Valtteri Filppula's older brother)will probably be heading to the Griffin's just as his younger brother did before cracking the Detroit line up. Last season iFlip (wonder how long before he lands an Apple endorsement?) won the Jari Kurri trophy this past season as the SM-liiga (Finnish league) playoff MVP as his team (TPS) won the leagues championship.

Kirk Maltby who is on a two-way contract for this season will probably also be starting off the season in Grand Rapids. The four time Stanley Cup Champion that Detroit traded Dan McGillis to the Edmonton Oilers for back in the 1995-96 season will bring that veteran experience to the young players in the Red Wings development system.

Having Jiri Fischer (Red Wings Director of Player Development) and Chris Chelios (Red Wings Executive Advisor to General Manager) off ice helping with development of prospects; and Kirk Maltby on ice - the Griffin's are going to be going places.

Other players possibly heading to Grand Rapids:

Forwards:
Joakim Anderson
William Coetzee
Jordan Owens
Jamie Tardif
Aaron Downey

Defense:
Doug Janik
Siarhei Kolasau
Derek Meech (would have to clear waivers first; and is currently having concussion symptoms after game one of the preseason against the Pittsburgh Penguins)

Goaltenders:
Joey MacDonald
Jorand PearceMonicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05312767310447197192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4346434586048489051.post-58891260453510393762010-09-27T14:04:00.033-04:002010-09-27T16:32:21.616-04:00Red Wings Round UpSearching the web to bring you the best Red Wing stories out there...

Before going on to ponder what is to come we take a look at the time that has passed as former Red Wing Mathieu Dandenault retires.
